Student A: You are the host father.
You come from the US and you are 38 years old. You live in New York and you have a wife and two children aged 14 and 5. You have a Russian student Tanya staying with you for a year. It’s Sunday now and you are having breakfast together.
Tanya has cooked traditional Russian dish for you – pancakes. You don’t find them tasty but you feel pleased with Tanya’s attempt to treat you with this dish. Your younger daughter keeps moaning and saying she doesn’t like the pancakes at all and that she’s not going to eat them. Tanya feels really bad. You want to calm everyone down and sort out the situation.

1 Everyone experiences culture shock and it is impossible to do anything about it. Каждый испытывает культурный шок и с этим ничего нельзя поделать.
2 Although it’s impossible to avoid culture shock, you can prepare for it so as not to suffer too much. Хотя и невозможно избежать культурного шока, вы можете к нему подготовиться, чтобы не страдать так сильно.

COLDITZ — Escape Academy

colditz castle
The gloomy Colditz Castle was the most famous prisoner-of-war camp during the Second World War. The Germans thought that it was impossible to escape from it. Hermann Goering himself visited the castle at the beginning of the war and said that it was absolutely ‘escape-proof’.
So the Germans decided to use Colditz Castle as a special prison for ‘flight risks’ — people who had tried to escape from others prisoner-of-war camps. What they didn’t realise was that putting so many determined minds together, they were creating a truly international escape academy.

Queen Boudicca

There is a famous statue of Queen Boudicca next to the Houses of Parliament in London

What are women to do when their men go off to war? Historically the answer was: ‘stay at home and look after the house, land, and children’, although in ancient Britain women often followed their men-folk to the field of battle, and sometimes even took part in the fighting (pre-Christian Britain even had a very successful military leader, Queen Boudicca, who almost succeeded in driving the Romans out of Britain).
